The ana­lyt­ical challenge is how to move beyond the the­or­etical asymmetries and linearities of these frameworks, with their implicit alignment of power relations and loci of agency, and “ac­know­ledge” consumers, along with producers, brokers, and supermarkets, as relational actors in recursive, mutually constituted networks. ” To do this, we will address head-­on a long-­standing question in sociological theory re­gard­ing the nature of commodity exchange: are commodities illusory fetishes hiding true social relationships, as Marx would argue?

The al­tern­ative food movement would be more effect­ive, we argue, if it worked with a more reflexive notion of justice, one based on a clear under­ standing of the complexities of justice in its various and contra­dict­ory meanings. In de­veloping this argument, we look at the per­vas­ive but unexamined concep­ tions of justice – communitatarian, anticorporate, and lib­eral egal­it­arian – under­ lying much food activism, as well as the current em­brace of a more cultural notion of justice in food movement agendas.

We now extend this reflexive open-­endedness to ideas of social justice in local food networks. How can we work towards just food in local food pol­itics?
